A measure of success can be a very personal thing, some want a university that values student engagement, and ratios of support, while others look for internship opportunities or employment prospects as measure of success.
We at Learning Pathways take the position of “Best Fit” which is when a university meets the needs of a student academically, socially, and financially. It is a measure that is clearly identified by the student and family.
When we analyze how established ranking institutions like Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings or Forbes measure success we notice a variation in what they classify as successful. One area the two differ is in the types of categories they use for markers of success. THE allocates 7.5% of its total score on the university's ability to attract international students from across the globe. Forbes does not use this category. THE does not identify post-graduate success as a relevant indicator in its analysis but Forbes allocates 32.5% of its total score to this.
Interestingly to many of our students is the weighting of student-to-staff ratios.
The Times Education (THE) World University Rankings allocates just 4.5% to its 100% total score to this category; Forbes, on the other hand, weighs its student-to-faculty ratio at a whopping 20% of its total score.
